Constatámos ainda a
PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder resulting from the confrontation with an extreme stressor agent. Given the lack of studies on the combatants of the Portuguese colonial war (PCW), we developed a comparative study in order to access the prevalence of symptoms or diagnosis of PTSD and its impact on self-esteem and coping, in a sample of 874 Portuguese men (combatants and civilians). The results show that combatants presented higher PTSD symptomatology, lower self-esteem and less adaptive coping strategies. They also present higher levels of conversion and refusal strategies. We also found an association between the decrease of PTSD and the increase in self-esteem. This study confirms a great prevalence of PTSD symptoms among combatants. It stresses the psychological vulnerability associated with the negative impact of PTSD symptomatology on individual internal resources, in general. |
