Abstract: | This paper examines the conflicts between liberal monarchy supporters and liberal republicans in the province of Pernambuco in the period that preceded the 1820 Porto Revolution until the independence of Brazil. It highlights the difficulties of the colonial elite in dealing administratively and politically with the two centres of power: Rio de Janeiro versus Lisbon, Pedro versus D. João VI. |
