As roças de São Tomé e Príncipe – um património da Lusofonia

Abstract

Na sua génese, a palavra ´roça’ significa ´desbravar mato’, ´abrir clareiras’ ou ´terreno onde se roçou o mato’, mas existe alguma imprecisão relativamente aos fatores que determinaram a escolha deste termo para o contexto santomense. O certo é que a criação e a organização destas estruturas encontram paralelismos e influências nas suas congéneres de ambiente tropical, nomeadamente os engenhos de açúcar e as fazendas do Brasil e as fincas espanholas. Devido às múltiplas influências arquitetónicas as roças são muito mais do que um património de São Tomé e Príncipe, mas de toda a Lusofonia. Constituem a herança mais profunda de um povo, que importa salvaguardar e proteger, a bem da cultura lusófona e do desenvolvimento futuro do arquipélago.

The word “roça” originally means “cut scrub”, “cut vegetation to create a clearing” or “field whose scrub was cut”. However, there is no clear explanation as to why this term was chosen to name the fields of São Tomé and Príncipe. These fields hold some resemblance, in terms of their foundation and organization, to similar ones in Brazil (the sugar mills) and in Spain (the “fincas”). In view of the several architectural influences, the “roças” are more than a heritage of Sao Tome and Principe, they are a Lusophone heritage. The “roças” are the most inner heritage of a people, one that should be preserved and protected for the benefit of Lusophone culture and the future development of the archipelago.
