This article presents a comparative study in the food retail industry and focuses on the differences between large and small retail. Based on the literature of the Psychological Contract (Rousseau, 2000; 2008) at the workplace, the study aimed to comprehend which are the differentiating factors in the (non) compliance of the Psychological Contract between the employees of large and small retail. The questionnaire: Psychological Inventory Contract, developed by Rousseau (2008); translated and adapted to the Portuguese-speaking population by Palanteão (2011) was adopted. The study was conducted in a large retail sales area, where a convenience sample of 73 individuals was collected: 37 individuals from large retail; and 36 from small retail. The latter were customers of the large retail commercial area in which the study was conducted. Results show significant differences in the employees’ perception of the types of Psychological Contract existent between each of the retail sectors, namely, the relational and transitional contract types, and the satisfaction level of the employees. Based on these results, a new variable to explore in future studies on the Psychological Contract has emerged: the organizational dimension, which may determine the types of Psychological Contract, as well as the inherent satisfaction rates. |
