Scientific literature suggests that minor depression associated with schizophrenia may have implications in the cognitive functioning of individuals. The aim of this study was to verify whether there are significant cognitive differences between schizophrenic patients with and without minor depression. The sample consisted on 74 persons followed by four psychiatric institutions in Lisbon District, two publics and two privates institutions. The sample was divided into two groups, G1 with 37 participants (20 males and 17 females) with an average age of M = 42.27 and G2, also with 37 participants (20 male and 17 female), whit an average age of M = average of 41.39. The participants were underwent on a quantitative assessment based on the application of the WAIS III and the Hamilton Depression Scale. The results showed no significant differences between the two groups in terms of verbal IQ index and achievement IQ index. However, there was a statistically significant difference in the processing speed index, digit symbol coding, symbol search and arithmetic lower in individuals with schizophrenia and minor depression. It is concluded that the study results support the previous research on the assumption that individuals with minor depression and schizophrenia are more likely to suffer from cognitive deficits in performance by comparison to subjects with schizophrenia without minor depression.
