Autor: Monteiro, Adilson Emanuel Vieira Varela
população do arquipélago.
Cabo Verde.

Building bridges with language

Título: Building bridges with language
Autor: Silva, Isabel Fernandes
Resumo: The development of Web 2.0 has led to the appearance of collaborative writing tools, including wikis
and blogs. Wikis are particularly adept to collaboration among groups of users, as all members can
edit content at any time as well as comment peer work on every page. This paper aims to describe
and analyze the application and use of collaborative tools, namely a wiki and, at a later stage, Google
docs, within a virtual exchange project between students attending a Portuguese and an Iranian
university. The project entitled Building Bridges with Language has a threefold objective: raise
awareness to differences and similarities between cultures and perspectives on life among university
students in several countries and thus promote tolerance; enhance not only student writing and
speaking skills but also their autonomy in the use of English language; and, finally, develop students’
critical thinking towards learning. In group, students are required to create products using online tools
such as ©Voicethread or Microsoft Photostory. These products are then shared with their foreign
counterparts. Based on the information provided by the students’ audiovisual projects and on virtual
interaction, Portuguese and Iranian students write articles which will be published on an online
magazine created for the project. Through the wiki and Google docs, educators are able to monitor the
students’ learning progress and, simultaneously, students become consciously and actively a part of
the evaluation process

Título: Identidade e morte em "The Life to Come" e "The Other Boat" de E. M. Forster
Autor: Silva, Isabel Fernandes
As personagens principais,
verdadeira identidade.

Striving for quality - the process of creating a student satisfaction assessment tool

Título: Striving for quality - the process of creating a student satisfaction assessment tool
Autor: Silva, Isabel Fernandes; Quintas, Célia
Resumo: Universities are currently being challenged by deep and demanding change processes brought about by the Bologna Process. Moreover, competition in Higher Education is so strong that universities have to constantly adjust their policies.
Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL), a private university founded in 1986 in Lisbon, Portugal, has always been concerned with knowing their students’ perception of the institution so as to better meet their expectations. Therefore, a questionnaire on self-assessment was designed in 2007 by the Office for Quality Self-Assessment at UAL, having been initially applied as a paper version and as an online version in the past … years. The questionnaire has suffered several changes and its scales now evidence strong internal cohesion, which allows us to consider it an effective tool for measuring student perceived satisfaction at this Higher Education Institution (HEI).
Besides this standard tool, in 2010-11, researchers from CELCT, one of the university’s research units, also applied a questionnaire, as part of a project called “New Learning Identities”, on the relevance of ICT contents and resources for the students’ learning experience in Higher Education (see Fernandes Silva & Rodrigues Duarte, 2011, 2012). This questionnaire was applied to students doing a degree and attending the course unit of English and to students attending an Erasmus Intensive Language Course (EILC) in Portuguese.
This paper derives from these two different experiences and aims to assess the perceived satisfaction of two groups of Erasmus students who attended an EILC at UAL in July and September 2012 by means of a paper version of our standard questionnaire.
Subsequently, we will compare this data with that collected through the application of the same questionnaire to full-time students at UAL so as to assess which differences and similarities arise, considering that full-time students and EILC students are subject to different integration processes at social, time and space levels.
